Fracture Putty creates new bone. Since the putty is load bearing, the patient is mobile (University of Texas)

DARPA seeks dynamic new material to promote healing.

This is a request for proposals from DARPA. They are apparently looking for someone or institution to develop a putty like material that can packed in around a bone fracture. Once the fracture has been packed with the putty, the bone will be restored to full load bearing capabilities within days.

The putty would be absorbed by the body while healing of the bone completes. But, since the putty is acting like a bone, the injured party would be able to walk around and function normally.

Pretty neat stuff. This proposal was posted in June of 2008.

In the interim, University of Texas has been awarded a $5.2 million contract to start developing the putty.
