A Russian satellite, that was believed to be inactive, crashed into an Iridium Holdings, Co. satellite. Iridium Holdings has a network of 65 satellites that relay calls for cell phones.
The debris field from the satellite collision is currently being tracked and mapped. At the moment orbital debris experts are tracking dozens of large pieces of debris from the collision, although the count is expected to get much higher. The debris was originally detected by the U.S. Space Surveillance Network on Tuesday. I'm unclear if NASA is currently tracking the debris, although the U.S. Space Surveillance Network is certainly tracking the debris. The US Space Surveillance Network is operated by the military.
There have been 4 other recorded collisions of man-made orbiting craft. The four previous collisions were considered minor.
