Capitalizing on Sex in Space; How To (maybe)
Fact. Sex in Space is a fascinating subject that captures the public imagination. In the last three days two articles have appeared on major online news aggregations (fark and disinfo).
For years I have had an idea festering in my mind. That idea has been the creation of a video series documenting sex in space. Tons of people in the world wants to know what the kinetics of sex (ie, how does booty jiggle) in space are like. While the idea at first sounds pornographic, I imagine that there will be many other distribution avenues open for the entrepreneur who undertakes this venture.
The Idea
The basic idea is that someone pays for a film crew and cast to take a ride aboard a space ship. I recommend an orbital flight that lasts longer than 48 hours, for the sake of capturing plenty of footage. It would also be helpful if the cast and crew are able to interchange job duties. IE, the camera person should be fit enough to take part in the filming and any cast member should be able to work the camera. Once the crew is in a zero-g environment, procreation and filming will begin. The cast and crew should attempt to create as much sexual footage as possible while in the zero-g environment. I recommend attempting to capture footage that produces a story line, as this will facilitate the most flexible distribution possibilities. Once on earth, the footage captured can be edited into pornographic or documentary film styles. The multiple film styles will allow the film to be sold using several distribution outlets. Given enough footage, it may be possible to re-edit the film into many distributable films.
The Cost
Initially, I thought that the MIR station would be the ideal location. A three person crew could be launched into space at the cost of about $10 million per person. $30 million dollars may not be much for science, but it may be a little much to make back on a couple of porn films and a documentary or two. I think at the moment, the best best is to wait for Bigelow Aerospace to get their inflatable hotel into space. Hopefully a short 2-3 day stay will cost a fraction of what the MIR station charges, enabling a larger crew to participate and dropping the investment cost to a more manageable $5 million dollars or so.
Important Background
This morning, while going through disinfo.com, I found another article about sex in space. In this article, the Christoper Beam discusses the officially denied possibility that astronauts have already had sex in space. More importantly Mr Beam links to this incredible article documenting a hoax regarding scientific experimentation of sexual positions in space. In the article 10 different positions are 'attempted' and the success, failure, and pleasurability of each position is documented. While this article is regarded as a hoax, it does show that some thought was put into the act of procreating in space.
